The Shipper Service Configuration page is used to configure user authentication and user authorization.
Authentication is used to verify that users are who they say they are. This is done in Shipper Service by checking usernames and passwords. Shipper Service supports both HTTP Authentication and User Authentication. HTTP Authentication alone is only recommended for intranet installations if you trust all users equally. It is usually impractical for internet installations unless you only have one user and you trust that user completely. User Authentication is recommended for both intranet and internet installations. User Authentication also turns on user authorization.
Authorization is used to determine which data and features a user is allowed to see and use. When User Authentication is enabled, anonymous users and unknown users are not allowed to access Shipper Service
. To authorize a user you must add them to the Shipper Service configuration. Authorized users are initially able to access and use all the features of Shipper Service. However, you can restrict both the data and features each user can access by editing their account settings.

Anonymous users can access two features of Shipper Service: GetVersion and GetStoreInformation. GetVersion returns the current Shipper Service version. This is used to "ping" Shipper Service to make sure it is installed and running. GetStoreInformation returns the store's name and primary email contact. |
